Oil futures and ETFs fell sharply on Thursday, while inverse crude ETFs soared amid rumors of there being a chance to mitigate tensions in the Middle East. Crude traders have been observing how issues in the Middle East are playing out. That helps to assess global risks to the oil market. After slumping in the prior sessions, U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures fell nearly $2 to $73.82 per barrel. That’s roughly 2.3%.

Europe's chemical industry enters 2024 mired in one of the deepest crises it has ever faced. The industry struggled with weak demand throughout 2023, which caused chemical prices to drop at a time of historically high costs, particularly for energy and feedstocks and exacerbated by heavy labor and regulatory expenses. The impact on Europe-based companies' financial results has been harsh and they see no significant upturn until mid-2024 at the earliest. Not registered?

Using multiple approaches, the modulation of climate variability on global ocean waves from 1981 to 2020 is investigated based on a wave hindcast model forced by ERA5 winds. These climate variabilities include: El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Antarctic Oscillation (AAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

Extreme significant wave height estimates, and their probability of exceedance, are fundamental offshore and coastal engineering design parameters. These estimates are characterised by uncertainty due to an incomplete understanding of the atmosphere-ocean energy and momentum exchanges during intense storms. This particularly affects extreme wave statistics of ocean regions exposed to large and frequent synoptic disturbances such as Extra-Tropical Cyclones (ETCs).
