TAMPICO – The owner of the Ronald Reagan Birthplace and Museum last week transferred ownership to the conservative group that recently bought the Reagan Boyhood Home in Dixon. WPW Partners of Chicago, which bought the two connected downtown Tampico properties at 111 and 113 S. If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? This oft-cited question has been on my mind a lot lately, not because I have any designs on becoming a philosopher, but rather because a few weeks ago a tree fell in our woods. I wasn’t there when it happened, so I can’t address the bigger metaphysical question. But I do know that on a smaller, local level, the after-effects of this calamity are going to be felt – and heard – for some time to come.

Batavia Public Library’s monthly lunch hour book program, Books Between Bites, will begin its 35th season on Sept. 21. The series is hosted from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the Founders Room of the Batavia Public Library, at 10 S. Batavia Ave. The programs are free and open to the public, and will run through May 2024. Reservations are not required, and parking is available in the lot just south of the library. The latest Bureau County Cruise Around will meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at Beck’s West, located at 605 W. Peru St. in Princeton before traveling to Tony’s Butt Shack, 601 Route 6 in Hollowayville. The group meets one Wednesday a month to drive to different locations to hang out with like-minded car people. Those who can’t meet at 6 p.m. can join the group at Tony’s Butt Shack. The Plattville United Methodist Church, 13025 Church Rd. in between Morris and Yorkville, is hosting its annual Ham Supper from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.
