Lance Harris and Nicole (Coates) Schaefbauer were standouts in their own right coming through the ranks of Bureau County sports. Harris was a first team all-stater for Ohio’s 1986 runner-up basketball team, scoring 1,936 career points. He went on to play for Sauk Valley and Division 2 Lewis University. Coates Schaefbauer, now the Executive Director for the IESA, helped lead the 1990 Princeton volleyball team to the Class A State championship and was a first team all-stater.

U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Dunlap, and State Sen. Tom Bennett, R-Gibson City, have teamed up to open a new district office in Morris at 1715 N. Division St., and solidified it with a ribbon-cutting on Monday. LaHood said he’s happy to have an office in Morris just as he was thrilled when he found out Grundy County would be in his district upon the redistricting in 2020. “We already knew a few people up here and I knew the reputation of Grundy County and the people that live here,” LaHood said.

I’m feeling sentimental. Our youngest grandchild turns 2 today. Two is a pivoting point; he’s not quite a baby and not quite a preschooler. And time is flying by way too fast. Warren was born towards the end of COVID constraints. Hospitals still had visitor restrictions so he was a few days old before I held him. He was snuggly and had a head full of wavy hair. Newborns have a way of bringing out dreams and the best in us.

Like a lot of girls, I have happy memories of playing with Barbie dolls. After all, Barbie is an icon in the toy world, and her grip was strong on those of us who grew up in the 1970s. Of course, for a girl like me, who grew up in a household that didn’t have a lot of money, Barbie also was a source of great angst. As the years have passed, I’ve come to realize that getting to play with vintage Barbies instead of the brand-new ones that all my friends had was a privilege.

The Friends of Mount Bloom invites the public to attend a ceremony to celebrate the new entrance and archway on the north side of the Mount Bloom Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, located on 1000 N. Ave. West of Tiskilwa. This event marks the final major project of the group that formed in 2008. The brief ceremony will recognize the many volunteers who made the final phase of the group’s mission come to fruition.
