MPs, including a former home secretary, have told the JC that the sentencing of Daniel Khalife on Monday – for spying and escaping prison – show the need to take the threat posed by Iran to the UK seriously. The 23-year-old former soldier escaped from HMP Wandsworth in south-west London in September 2023 by clinging to the underside of a food delivery truck, sparking a city-wide manhunt.

An impossible Judean date palm grows in Kibbutz Ketura of the Arava Valley, deep in the Negev Desert. Named Methuselah, the palm grew from 2,000-year-old seed excavated from the ancient fortress of Masada overlooking the Dead Sea. Arching over 11 feet high, Methuselah is a botanical miracle in a desert oasis, marking the reincarnation of a long-extinct biblical tree to Israel. The date palm isn’t the only miracle in Ketura.

Major General (reserve) Eyal Zamir has been designated to replace Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi as the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) chief of staff, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Saturday night. Zamir, 59, is the current director general of Israel’s Defence Ministry and will assume his new post on March 6. He has previously served as deputy chief of staff (2018 to 2021), and before that, he led the Southern Command from 2015 to 2018.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington on Sunday morning, emphasising the importance of his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump. Released hostage Yarden Bibas was tormented by his Hamas captors about the fate of his wife and children during 484 days in captivity, according to reports after his release yesterday. On the 14th day of the ceasefire-hostage deal, Yarden, 35, was released alongside Ofer Calderon, 54, in a staged handover in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis. A couple of hours later, American Israeli hostage Keith Siegel, 65, was later handed over to the Red Cross at Gaza City Airport.

Ofer Kalderon and Yarden Bibas have been handed over to Red Cross officials and will return to Israel after 484 days in Gaza. But American-Israeli Keither Siegel, who has been the subject of strong lobbying from Washington, did not appear to be part of the release party.

Emergency services have tackled a fire after it tore through a synagogue in Greater Manchester. Emergency services tackled the blaze at the Satmar V'Yoel Moshe synagogue, which was extinguished by 9.30pm on Friday night. Enormous plumes of smoke from the Orthodox shul on Northumberland Street could be seen across Salford on Friday evening. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said the fire was extinguished by 9.30pm, and fire crews will remain on the scene overnight.
