TRAVEL | HUMOURAt the time of this incident, Vindhyachal, by the river Ganges, had all the vibes of a North Indian small town that I found charming. The only road running through it was unmetalled. Bicycles, vendor carts and horse-drawn tongas were all that plied on it. Life seemed simple and unhurried. The men shared snuff and small talk under shady peepul trees. Women gathered around the wells. Children played hopscotch and gullidanda in the narrow lanes lined by mud huts and small houses.

1999, South China SeaThe frigid winter morning shrouded the South China Sea in a thick fog, obscuring the sleek fishing trawler of two Vietnamese fishermen, Binh Gia Tung and Chiman Quang Dung as it cautiously navigated the treacherous waters. Two days of fruitful fishing had buoyed their spirits but that very day, luck seemed to have abandoned them. The nets came up stubbornly empty several times.
