    The 2025 all-island bioeconomy summit is set to take place on 13 May in Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co Meath. The event will allow for key stakeholder and networks of the bio-based economy on the island of Ireland to meet and will this year focus on areas such as blue bio-based economy, commercial bio-based economy development and replacing fossil fuel products with new bio-based products. So far, over 200 delegates have registered.

    Pasturebase Ireland figures this week show that 35% of farmers have a cover below 600kg DM/ha, which spells trouble for these farms in the near future. When a grass cover dips below 550-600kg, then one of two things have happened; either there is very little regrowth on already grazed paddocks or the demand is significantly higher than the growth. For this spring, it’s a combination of both really. If you are in this bracket of farmer where cover is significantly low, then action needs to be taken.

    Grass growth rates have jumped significantly over the last few days and farmers can see the changes in the fields before their eyes. It’s a great time to be a farmer and to be able to experience the change in the seasons as we move to late spring and early summer. Growth rates at this time of year can be notoriously unpredictable. Most farmers will plan for growth to increase around now, but there’s no guarantee that it will come.

    The proposed construction of a new pig-fattening shed on an existing piggery at Rosderra Farms, Barnlough, Bansha, Co Tipperary, has been appealed for decision by an Bord Pleanála. An application for permission to carry out the planned development was submitted by Rosderra to Tipperary County Council in March 2024, with this application also seeking permission for an effluent tank and associated ancillary works relating to the proposed shed.

    Almost half of family farms in the UK have paused or cancelled planned investment on their farms in the wake of changes announced to agricultural property relief and business property relief by the Labour government, according to a new survey. More than 4,000 businesses and farms across the UK took part in the survey, which was conducted by independent consultancy CBI-Economics.
