Entering the Kinokamasihk Kiskinohamatokamik School on the Kehewin Cree Nation near St. Paul, Alta., students, staff and faculty are greeted by the steady rhythm of powwow drums and the sweet scent of burning sage. Everyone in this K-12 school gathers in a circular open-concept room which represents the sacred circle to say their morning prayer.

Coming from a farming background, wheat was a pillar in Carol S-B’s life. So much so, that she got a wheat sheaf tattoo. “Now, I need to put a circle around it with a line through it,” said S-B jokingly, as she discussed her new diagnosis of celiac disease. Born and raised in Calgary, S-B’s family members all live and work on farms around the city. This engraved in her a strong sense of pride in the Albertan farm life, which is often associated with wheat.

In the foothills just outside of Okotoks, on her 74-acre property, Ruth McDonald has dedicated her life to rescuing and rehabilitating horses in need through her non-profit organization, Heel and Hoof. Heel and Hoof strives to help as many horses in need as possible by providing medical care, training, and rehoming to horses that have been surrendered, sold to meat buyers or given up at auction. At just 16-years-old, McDonald knew she wanted a horse of her own.

In a small town that typically keeps to its traditional roots, a local production of the beloved Christmas classic, The Nutcracker, has been making waves by embracing diversity and inclusivity like never before. Two years ago, the St.Paul and District Arts Foundation recruited Dave Ganert to direct their annual production of The Nutcracker. This year, the foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary of the ballet and has become an annually anticipated performance for the community.
