    Coming from a farming background, wheat was a pillar in Carol S-B’s life. So much so, that she got a wheat sheaf tattoo. “Now, I need to put a circle around it with a line through it,” said S-B jokingly, as she discussed her new diagnosis of celiac disease. Born and raised in Calgary, S-B’s family members all live and work on farms around the city. This engraved in her a strong sense of pride in the Albertan farm life, which is often associated with wheat.

    Family and friends of Michael Van Ootenghem were joined by Flames Captain Mikael Backlund and other dignitaries to honour his memory and raise money at a floor hockey game on Feb. 28. Van Ooteghem was hoping to volunteer for this year’s Special Olympics before he tragically passed away last year after being struck by a train after attending a Flames game. In his memory, family and friends organized the game to raise money for the Special Olympics.

    For the third year in a row, Mount Royal and U of C split wins at the Crowchild Classic. With an attendance of 10,474, it marked the seventh classic in a row with a five-digit crowd. In the men’s game, the Dinos struck first as Jake Gricius scored 22 seconds into the game. After that, the teams both had their chances on the powerplay but the first period ultimately ended at 1-0. Early in the second period, history was made as Connor Bouchard assisted the Cougars first goal of the game.

    On Wednesday night, the Mount Royal Cougars hockey teams will take on the University of Calgary Dinos at the Scotiabank Saddledome in the famous Crowchild Classic. The winners take home 12 months of bragging rights and a 68-kilogram cast-iron City of Calgary manhole cover as a trophy. Overall, the Cougars and Dinos are having good seasons so far as both of the men’s teams are top-5 in Canada, the MRU women’s team is second in Canada and the women’s Dinos team is around middle of the pack.
