I was listening to a Boise radio station the other day and they had a segment on the importance of local broadcast media and how it builds community. The conversation featured an interview with board members of The History of Idaho Broadcasting Foundation and these board members talked about how important Marty Holtman was to the Boise area. Marty Holtman was a longtime radio host and legendary television weatherman who died earlier this year.

While I haven’t written about him in my newsletter before, I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker. I remember when I first saw Memento in the theater. My wife was in her first year in film school and the film had received some buzz from critics and industry folks who had seen the film at Sundance. It was a modern interpretation of some very classic noir tropes.

Okay, to be completely honest I love entertaining commercials in general, but there is something about the outlandish nature of some Japanese marketing that really appeals to me. When I first saw the Tom Selleck starring film Mr. Baseball, one of my favorite baseball films, I was really amused by the two sequences involving his filming commercials as a part of his employment with the Nagoya Chunichi Dragons.

On a recent family trip, I endeavored to unearth an electronic old school fantasy treasure from my past that had been haunting my waking dreams as of late - Mattel’s “Dungeons & Dragons Computer Labyrinth Game” from 1980. Fortunately, the Gnome keepers of the dragon flame (my young nephews) were able to locate the bequeathed contents in short order.
