One year after northern New York and northern Vermont were among the best places anywhere to view the Great North American Eclipse, a landmark in the Northeast Kingdom says it is clear the eclipse left a long-lasting impression on people who experienced it. "Something magic happened the day of the eclipse," said Mariama Jones, an educator at the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium in St. Johnsbury. St. Johnsbury was in the path of totality on April 8, 2024.

Chris Bohjalian, of Weybridge, released his 25th novel in March."The Jackal's Mistress" is set during the Civil War and has roots in Vermont. It is about a Union soldier from Vermont who is nursed back to health by the wife of a Confederate soldier after he suffered a grievous injury in battle.
'Wicked' author releases new book, addresses possible story for Glinda

Fresh off the success of the 2024 film "Wicked," the author of the book that inspired the Broadway and movie musical has released a new title. Gregory Maguire, who does much of his writing at his second home in Vermont's Orange County, released "Elphie: A Wicked Childhood" in late March. The new novel tells the story of the early years of the misunderstood figure named Elphaba who would grow up to be labeled as the Wicked Witch of the West.
'Safe at Home' offers layer of safety to survivors of crime

New upgrades are in place to a system in Vermont that gives a layer of protection to survivors of domestic violence, stalking, or other crimes. Safe at Home is run through the Vermont Secretary of State's office. It is an address confidentiality program that forwards important mail such as bills, ballots, or medications to a secure location. The program also provides an alternate address participants can use on government forms to minimize the chances their abusers or stalkers can locate them.
