When I heard Fousheé’s “Still Around” for the first time, my mood changed. At this point in my life, existential crises come and go on a weekly basis and mood swings happen, but this was different—I couldn’t even decipher my own internal response. I attribute this particular mood shift to the melody in “Still Around,” the lead single from Fousheé’s new album Pointy Heights. Speaking with her over Zoom, I blurted out that I believe there is such a thing as a Fousheé-type melody.

Hanumankind, or HMK as his team calls him, has a quiet intensity about him. The rapper from India, whose real name is Sooraj Cherukat, joined our Zoom call solo. As we started talking, several other members of his team popped in, nodding as he spoke and occasionally chiming in to re-emphasize a point he’s making. Even through the computer screen, HMK communicates with a sense of urgency and passion.

“People still love articles, man. Maybe there aren’t as many of us, but we still love reading articles.”That’s coming from 21-year-old Makhi Miller—Kai for short—from the West Side of Chicago. He’s a rapper (under the name Kaicrewsade), a community organizer, and someone who’s followed Pigeons & Planes and other music publications since his teenage years. I called him after discovering his song “Chickenscratch!” through a friend. It immediately became one of my most listened to new songs.

Do people still read intros? Probably not—nobody has time for that. It makes me think of an old saying about music on the radio in the 2000s: “You’ve got seven seconds to capture the listener’s attention with a song. If you don’t do that, they’ll change the station.” In 2024, there’s probably a rule like that for TikTok, but it’s probably more like three seconds.
