WACO, Texas (KWTX) – After years of development, the Cameron Park Zoo officially opened the Gloria and FM Young Penguin Exhibit. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, August 8, celebrating the Zoo’s 22 African Penguins. “There is just something special about penguins,” Brendan Wiley, Director of the Cameron Park Zoo, said.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - After years of delays, construction is underway on a new veterans housing development at the Doris Miller VA Medical Center. Construction began on Freedom’s Path Waco, a 34-unit development that will give leasing preference to homeless or near homeless veterans, on June 3. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the site on July 26.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Salvation Army in Waco’s newest officers Major Jeffrey and Captain Tammy Miracle officially assumed their new positions on Monday, June 24. This comes as Major James Taylor, who had led the Waco chapter of the Salvation Army since 2018, retired last month. The couple first commissioned as officers for the Salvation Army back in 1990 and have served in several different locations since then, most recently Freeport.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KWTX) – George H.W. Bush would have turned 100 years old on June 12, 2024. His children and grandchildren chose to honor him at his birthday celebration by skydiving into the lawn of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum on Friday, June 13. The former president had a tradition of going skydiving every 5th birthday, all the way up until he was 90 years old. Seven of Bush’s 19 grandchildren made the jump, as did his youngest son Marvin Bush.

Bishop Reicher Lego robotics team places 6th at national competition

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Bishop Reicher Catholic School held a ceremony celebrating its first Lego League middle school robotics team on Wednesday, May 29. The team traveled to Newark, New Jersey on May 18 to compete against 64 other schools from across the country at the American Robotics Invitational. Some of the team’s achievements during the competition include placing first in robot design, third in the lightning round robot competition, and sixth overall.

Affidavit: Waco man accused of sexual assault, allegedly attempted to hit victim with his car

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A Waco man is currently in custody for a sexual assault that occurred in the 1200 block of Lake Air Drive at around 9:23 p.m. on October 14, 2023. Eric Miguel Zapata, 25, has been charged with sexual assault, a second-degree felony, and is currently being held at the McLennan County Jail.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Baylor’s time in the NCAA tournament has come to an end. No. 6 Clemson defeated No.3 Baylor 72-64 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The Bears have now lost in the round of 32 three years in a row. Shots were not falling for the Bears early, and defensively the Tigers were not allowing open looks. Baylor went 8-24 in the early-goings. In the matchup against Colgate, the Bears had gone 19-30 at halftime. Clemson went into the half up 35-25.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (KWTX) – In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Baylor took down Colgate in round one of the NCAA Tournament, 92-67. Going into today’s matchup, Baylor was one of only four schools in the country with a win in each of the last four NCAA tournaments. This streak now extends to five. The Bears got hot early, shooting 63 percent from the floor (19-30) and 58 percent from three (7-12) in the first half, to jump out to an early lead.
