RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — After four years of searching for a bone marrow donor, a Richmond family will finally get the procedure needed to cure their son’s sickle cell anemia. Five-year-old Zion Ortiz, who suffers from a severe case of sickle cell anemia, will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant in September, and his half sister will be his donor. Ortiz’s mother, Taniqua Bates, said a swab test in April revealed Zion’s sister, who they’ve chosen to keep anonymous, was a haploidentical match.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Members of Richmond’s Iranian-American and Jewish communities spoke about the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, and whether or not the United States should become more involved. The United States decided to help Israel dismantle Iran’s nuclear program by launching three strikes on Iranian soil on Saturday, June 21. On Monday, June 23, Iran responded by launching missiles targeting a United States base in Qatar.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Restoration efforts continued after a Thursday storm left tens of thousands of Central Virginians without power. According to the Dominion Energy website, more than 280,000 customers were affected by storms on Thursday, June 19. Dominion Energy spokesperson Craig Carper said critical public infrastructures are the first places crews go for storm damage. “We’re restoring hospitals, public safety, police, fire, EMS and public schools,” Carper said.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Summer is nearly here, and so are the high temperatures. According to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), extreme heat is classified as temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two or three days. Extreme heat also causes more deaths each year than any other weather. If you’re outside, strenuous activity can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Those most at risk include babies, kids, older adults and people who are sick and overweight.

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Henrico project manager said a new Richmond labor rule will have benefits for workers and contractors bidding on projects. According to the city of Richmond website, all city-funded construction projects valued at $250,000 or more must adhere to prevailing wage requirements beginning July 1, 2025. A pay rate and level of benefits that contractors and subcontractors must pay workers, equal to what similar laborers in the area receive.
