The emotion that hit Torres, Santa Fe Indian School and the basketball community as news spread of the deaths of Indian School’s Nate and Jason Abeyta in a car crash earlier in the day remained raw. Torres was on the baseball field at Española Valley High School umpiring a junior varsity baseball doubleheader between the host Sundevils and Moriarty.

    Santa Fe Indian School is mourning the loss of two important members of its community. Longtime boys basketball coach Jason Abeyta and his brother, Nathan Abeyta, the assistant athletic director at the school, were killed in a car crash early Thursday morning. The brothers, members of Ohkay Owingeh, were driving in Rio Arriba County when the crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. 84 and N.M. 554 near Abiquiú, the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
