1980: Snooker fans in Maidenhead had a rare chance to see former World Snooker Champion Terry Griffiths. The then-Masters champion played ex-English Billiards Champion Mark Wildman over seven frames at Maidenhead Autos & Stevensons showrooms in Bath Road, and won 5-2. It was part of a series called Snooker Drive by United Dominions Trust, a car finance company.

Ward unrepresented in crucial planning vote The Advertiser (May 23) reported that plans for 225 new homes in Kimber’s Lane have finally been approved, in a meeting beset with absences. The voting panel was unbelievably reduced to just four members, where for previous decisions it would have expected nine. A change in constitution last month took the panel size from nine down to seven. Why was this change made?

2005: Fundraising efforts by villagers and donations helped to raise enough money to give Cookham Dean Village Hall a £45,000 new look. External building work was set to begin in the summer to create a new storage area and toilets. Inside, the hall was due to be painted, receive new sinks, worktops, lampshades and fire guards. 2005: Hundreds of youngsters across the borough had been doing their bit for health, fitness and the environment by walking to school.

1985: Guides from all over Bucks attended a water activities camp at Longridge, the National Scouting Centre at Bisham, to commemorate guiding’s 75th anniversary. It was the first time the camp in Quarry Wood Road had been used for an all-girls’ camp. More than 190 guides took part in two days of water sports using kayaks, canoes, rafts, yachts and dinghies.

Pelican crossing needed at problem junctionOn Friday I almost saw a child around 11 or 12 years old being killed. He was diagonally opposite me at the junction with the A4 and All Saints Avenue waiting patiently, like me, for all four sets of lights to go red so it was safe to cross. When they did so he began to cross and I almost did but something in the corner of my eye made me hesitate. I turned and saw a car accelerate through the red light and head straight for him.
