The North Carolina General Assembly returned to session this week for the final time in the calendar year. Within a few hours, the Senate successfully overruled the veto 30-19 of outgoing Governor Roy Cooper of the controversial S.B. 382. The state House will vote to override the veto when they come back in session later this week.

From 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., individuals cast their vote at local polling stations, and the evening was characterized by watch parties of news stations such as MSNBC and Fox News.

All results are pre-final canvas President-Elect Donald Trump will be the nation’s 47th president after a blowout night for the former White House occupier. Despite hopes and efforts from Democrats, Trump ended up outperforming Vice President Kamala Harris — and his own 2020 margins — in North Carolina. In counties like Forsyth, Wake and Mecklenburg, where Harris needed to potentially outdo President Joe Biden’s 2020 margins, Trump made marginal but consequential gains.

We need not look further than the last month of discourse on the social platform X, formerly Twitter, to figure out the public discourse we might expect after the polls close on Nov. 5. Hurricane Helene resulted in a torrent of misinformation, culminating in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) briefly pausing operations due to threats by a militia in the region.
