A proposed ban on wood-burning stoves in new-build homes has been lifted following a backlash from rural communities. Restrictions on their installation were put in place in September following regulations known as the New Build Heat Standard which came into effect in April. They permitted wood burning stoves in new homes and buildings only for emergency heating. But they will be lifted altogether from 1 January.

Auditions for Theatre Kent’s fall production of Jesus Christ Superstar begin this weekend. This marks the first large-scale musical production since the pandemic for the theatre company, and it’s looking for men and women aged 14-plus for all principal and ensemble roles. Non-traditional casting will be considered. Additionally, there are a limited number of ensemble roles available for children, aged eight to 13.

RNLI vessels went to the scene after the vessel issued a mayday message off Orkney on Saturday night. Pentland Ferries said smoke was detected in the engine room before the Pentalina became grounded off the village of St Margaret’s Hope. Sixty passengers, including three children and an infant, were evacuated from the ferry, as well as some of the crew. It is understood eight crew members have remained on the vessel to help manage the situation.

At just past 8am I am standing on East Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver with a small packet of crack cocaine in my hand. Snow is falling gently and dozens, if not hundreds, of drug addicts are already on the move, unbothered when they tread in the human faeces littering the pavement. Some have already had their fix, and slump lifelessly against shopfronts or slumber in makeshift tents where many stash guns and knives.
