In response to Roy Berger’s Dec. 21 letter on Donald Trump:Mr. Berger quotes what Donald Trump told his supporters on Jan. 6, stating they should “walk down to the Capital” and that “if you don’t fight like hell, you are not going to have a country anymore.” What I heard Mr. Trump say that day was for people to “peacefully and patriotically let your voices be heard.”Mr. Berger also doesn’t note that Mr. Trump requested the National Guard the day before and was denied by Nancy Pelosi.

The work is never black and white, he says: “It’s never about good and evil. It’s never about an ultimate value you pursue — it’s about clashing values.”He calls his work “fringe diplomacy” because it’s behind the scenes. The work in St. Louis Art Museum’s new exhibition has a continent full of stories. “Narrative Wisdom and African Arts” was inspired in part by a chair whose carvings include masks and scenes of community life, such as women preparing food and men playing drums. The 19th-century chair by a Chokwe artist in Angola is a “visitor favorite,” says Nichole N. Bridges, museum curator of the arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
