I told my husband the chicks were on tour and they would be stopping by our daughter’s school. He looked surprised. His mind went immediately to the group of musicians formally known as the Dixie Chicks. He’d somehow forgotten about the three peeping baby chickens cozied down under a heat lamp in the next room. Yes, we are back in the chicken business, to the two younger daughters’ great delight.

A big fundraiser for FFA chapters each year involves selling boxes of fruit. One South Dakota chapter is raising money by selling specially branded bags of seed corn and building confidence through the experience. “It’s a large ask from the grower when you’re buying a bag of corn versus some fruit. That takes some confidence,” said Steven Senyak. Senyak is a retail sales agronomist with Brevant seeds based in Gettysburg, South Dakota.

It was a frigid day in mid-February, but a South Dakota-based seed company was busy getting ready for planting season. A noisy new seed cleaning machine that roared to life this winter at AP Select’s Clear Lake, South Dakota headquarters, was sorting through soybeans, checking for uniform size, color and shape as the beans bounced through sieves and along conveyor belts. The machine runs 12-hour shifts, cleaning 500 units – about 70 million seeds – in an hour.

DENVER – One topic of interest at Commodity Classic was high-oleic soybeans. As a former dairyman, South Dakota farmer Todd Hanten says he’s excited at the prospect of growing soybeans to feed the growing number of dairy cows around his Deuel County home. A director on the United Soybean Board, Hanten said the checkoff is working to research and promote high-oleic soybeans as a beneficial part of a dairy ration, to increase milk fat and maybe decrease methane emissions.
