At the far end of the Boone County Detention Center lobby is a thick, green metal door that can only be opened from a control room at the center of the facility. It opens with the clanking of internal locks and closes with a slam. Behind that door lies a world that has been thrust into the national spotlight since President Donald Trump took office for the second time. The Boone County jail is the only full time Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Kentucky.

Should disaster strike Kentucky this year, DRC Emergency Services will have the important and potentially lucrative job of cleaning up the wreckage. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded a pre-disaster contract to the Texas-based company in July 2024. A pre-disaster contract is one of the most important steps local governments can take to prepare themselves for an emergency, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, because they establish set prices before disaster strikes.

It sucks to see good journalism gone bad, and it's worthwhile to try and figure out what went wrong. But I would love to see some quotes from journalists who came through CPI about the work we did and what a special place it was at one time.
