An unexpected burst of color is painted on an Altadena home in a landscape marked by the devastation of flames on the Eaton Fire. Graphic designer Courtenay Hrubesky and her partner Pamela Key, a professional illustrator, decided to paint the very bright beacon of resilience on the side of a wall of their Altadena home after it miraculously survived the Eaton Fire. "Our neighbor's house was fully engulfed to 20 feet in the air and we were watching giant embers go across the street," Key said.

With growing panic in his voice, Los Angeles County Fire Department Captain Alek Edwards watched as the Palisades Fire moved closer to his Tahitian Terrace mobile home park on Jan. 7. "This was like no fire ever seen before," he said Edwards, a 13-year veteran with the department, was off duty when the fire started. He evacuated his family, including his 4-year-old daughter, but he stayed behind with some neighbors to try and save their homes.

Firefighters, police officers, and paramedics, some of whom lost their homes in the Southern California wildfires, were honored at a special event at Dodger Stadium for their bravery during the Palisades and Eaton fires. Two of the thousands of homes burned in the Eaton Fire last month belonged to the family of Los Angeles firefighter Jake Saucedo. "I was off duty. I was unfortunately there to witness the whole thing," Saucedo said.

Seven months into her pregnancy and struggling to find a place to live, Marina Morse must now live out of her car after the Eaton Fire damaged her Altadena apartment. "I slept at the Macy's in Pasadena last night," Morse said. "They said the fire survivors are sleeping in the Macy's parking lot."Morse had been staying at the American Red Cross shelter at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. She said she went to the hospital last week due to some complications with her pregnancy.

A temporary shelter housing nearly 300 wildfire survivors in Pasadena is set to close this week as the Red Cross works to find a new location. In the meantime, some at the shelter have said overcrowding has become an issue. "Some people have even called the fire marshal because there are two many people in one room," said Alexander, an Altadena man who lost his apartment in the Eaton Fire and has been staying at the shelter. "And that's a problem.
