ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The race for Allentown mayor could go the distance. Two-term Councilman Ed Zucal is looking to earn the Democratic Party’s nomination over incumbent Mayor Matt Tuerk in the May 20 primary. But Zucal could end up on the ballot in November even if he fails with his bid this month, as he’s actively seeking Republican write-in votes. Zucal in the final weeks of his primary challenge is sending out mailers criticizing the mayor.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A newly resurfaced basketball court at “one of the best parks in the Lehigh Valley” welcomed dozens of kids this week for its grand reopening. More than $100,000 in upgrades were poured into Bucky Boyle Park in what Mayor Matt Tuerk said was just the “first phase” of a larger revamp. That money, from the city and Trexler Trust, paid for refreshed basketball courts, LED lighting that will let people play longer, benches and a new water fountain to refill water bottles.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — An Allentown man is likely to spend decades in prison after he admitted Thursday to his part in a deadly armed robbery in October 2020 on the Hamilton Street bridge. Jose Santiago, 42, on Thursday in Lehigh County Court pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. Jose Santiago faces 30 to 60 years in prison, according to the county District Attorney’s Office.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A Democratic congressman from California is set to hold a town hall this month in Allentown as part of a tour targeting Republican-held swing districts. U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna on Monday announced plans to hold a Benefits Over Billionaires forum this month in Rep. Ryan Mackenzie’s district. Khanna called out Republicans for shirking their responsibilities by not holding in-person town halls. The event is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. May 17 in the Americus Hotel in downtown Allentown.
