CESKE BUDEJOVICE, Czech Republic — Ten months from now, Taylor Heise will very likely be wearing the red, white and blue of Team USA in her first-ever Olympic Games. Heise and her U.S. teammates will head to Italy as one of the two favorites — if not the favorite. In the final Women's World Championship hockey tournament before the 2026 Olympic Games, the U.S. and Canada again met for the gold medal — the 24th consecutive time those countries have played for gold at the WWC.

It won’t surprise many, either, if their division semifinal series goes the full five games.

Mike Bailey settled in to throw indoor batting practice to one last hitter on a cold January day at the University of Minnesota in the mid-1970s. The first batter he faced slashed line drive after line drive. The second batter Bailey pitched to sprayed the ball around, placing it wherever he wanted to. The third batter? Bailey would throw a pitch then quickly duck behind the protective screen that shielded batting practice pitchers from line-drive come-backers.
