ROCHESTER — That swing. It’s special. Mikey Johnson has shown it off for the past two years as a member of the Rochester Redhawks American Legion baseball team and the past three while playing high school varsity baseball for Rochester Mayo. When it comes to at-bats, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Johnson seems to get his money’s worth, every time. “Mikey’s swing is very level and it stays that way through the zone,” Redhawks and Mayo coach Tom Senne said.

One of the best local fruits starting to show up now are berries — strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries, a whole different fruit taste-wise than what we get most of the year. These seasonal favorites are perfect eaten just as is, baked in crisps, turned into a sauce for ice cream, or just sprinkled over ice cream. For many — including my friend Julie Warner — the best option is to turn them into a pie, either individually or combined. Does baking a pie make you nervous?

Five cities, four days, three kids, and the kind of weekend you couldn't plan if you tried. Thursday, 3:15 p.m.: Lindy and daughter Emma, 18, drive to Chicago for Admitted Students Day at DePaul University. They plan to get home Friday. These are our only plans for the weekend. Friday, 3 p.m.: Lindy and Emma head home. Friday, 3:01 p.m.: On a whim, they detour to Milwaukee, ask son Henry, 23, if he wants to meet for dinner.
