MANILA, Philippines — The country’s tourism sector may take a hit if a Supreme Court ruling allowing commercial fishing inside the 15-kilometer municipal waters becomes final and executory, industry players said. Marivic Maramot, owner of Batangas Scuba Academy, said water activities like scuba diving, island hopping, snorkeling, kayaking and other activities will be adversely affected by the High Court’s decision.

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s meat imports in the first two months rose by a third on an annual basis to over 230,000 metric tons (MT), driven by higher purchases abroad of pork and chicken meat, government data showed. Latest Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) data showed that meat imports from January to February reached 237,681 MT, over 33 percent higher than the 177,819 MT recorded in the same period last year.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines should not leave farmers behind in its trade negotiations with the United States regarding reciprocal tariff to ensure that producers’ concerns are heard, according to agriculture groups. The Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) and the MAGSASAKA Party List (MAGSASAKA) said the government must conduct consultations with farmers and other key stakeholders before beginning its negotiations with the US over Trump’s tariffs.

MANILA, Philippines — Despite a projected higher rice output, the Philippines will still have to import about 3.5 million metric tons (MT) of the staple this year to meet its total requirement, government estimates showed. Local rice production is estimated to grow by three percent to 12.89 million MT this year from last year’s 12.48 million MT, based on National Economic and Development Authority data obtained by The STAR.
