Dakota's dream of winning its first state title in softball came to a screeching and dramatic halt when LeRoy pushed a run across in the bottom of the 10th of Friday's IHSA Class 1A state semifinals. Dakota fell 2-1 in the low scoring, yet back-and-forth battle in Peoria. They will return for the third-place game at 9 a.m. Saturday where it will take on Casey-Westfield, 6-3 losers to Carrollton in the other 1A state semi. But it almost earned a shot at the title.

There were 19 shooters representing the Stillman Valley Clay Target League at last weekend's state championships, and for their first trip to state: "I'd say they did a great job," coach Andrew Dailey said. The team that competes at SM&SF Club just outside of Stillman Valley and is a member of the USA Clay Target League took its top 19 shooters to the Brittany Shooting Park in Bunker Hill for the Illinois State High School Championships on Sunday, June 1.

Which means a lot of what happens will come down to North Boone's Courtney Troutt and Dakota's AJ Howarth.

This time, the Rockford area will be represented in Class 1A and 2A at the state softball tournament this weekend. At least. North Boone, which placed second at state last year, and Dakota each went to battle on Monday night for the right to go to their respective state tournaments. And they both pulled out dramatic victories to advance to Friday's 1A and 2A semifinals in Peoria.
