SPRINGFIELD — People looking for inexpensive family fun this summer won’t have to go far, since the city is returning with a full lineup of its free movies in multiple parks and concerts at the Forest Park Amphitheater. The fairly low cost to the city is worth it for the enjoyment that everyone — from toddlers to retirees — get from the annual summer tradition, said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno when announcing the lineup. There will be eight concerts and 10 movie showings in July, August and September.

Her Springfield church is being rebuilt after arson and the man who set it on fire, in a racist tirade, is in custody accused of committing a hate crime. But for Rev. Terrlyn Curry Avery, the story isn’t over. “As a pastor whose church was burned down, if we don’t look at the rhetoric that caused such racism and hatred we won’t get anywhere,” said Curry Avery, pastor of MLK Community Presbyterian Church and interim executive director of the Healing Racism Institute.

Just voted and paid my poll tax. Anyone who has a polling place in a school knows this is the money you pay to the PTO bake sale/fundraiser run in the hallway you walk through after voting. Middle schoolers are running mine this year so who could walk past without helping them.
