SPRINGFIELD – City Councilor Sean Curran wants to create a state undersecretary of economic development focused on Western Massachusetts, saying many good ideas for business and tourism growth have not made it past the planning stage. Curran, a former state representative who is chairman of the City Council’s economic development committee, wrote to Gov. Maura Healey last week asking her to consider creating the position to focus on Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire counties.

Sarno unveiled his proposal for next year’s nearly $1 billion budget, saying residents will neither be wowed by new programs nor disappointed with cuts to existing services. “This is a solid budget, and it keeps all the core services going,” Sarno said, adding the budget is balanced, without using any of the city’s $71.7 million in stabilization funds for the 11th year.

SPRINGFIELD — Police arrested countless armed offenders, saved the life of a 10-month-old baby who stopped breathing, chased down six men accused of a string of armed robberies and one sergeant saved her cousin’s life without using her gun, badge or police training. Police officials on Wednesday recognized nearly 150 of their own and a handful of law enforcement from different departments in awards that stemmed from 37 different incidents from October 2023 to now.
