The coming week features four very different concerts in Davis. One is an all-Bach concert, performed by a highly ranked, three-decade-old baroque ensemble from the Bay Area. Another is a boisterous band from Kyiv, whose costumed concerts mix traditional Ukrainian music with folk instruments from around the world. Yet another concert features chamber works composed by Soviet-era composers, whose musical lives were sometimes interfered with by heavy-handed Kremlin edicts.

Violinist Joshua Bell is a familiar face at the Mondavi Center... sometimes strolling onto the Jackson Hall stage as conductor/concerto soloist with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, other times appearing as a recital artist joined by a pianist. Bell's visit to Mondavi's Jackson Hall on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. will be one of his recital appearances, and he'll be joined by pianist Peter Dugan (who also played at Mondavi as Bell's partner in a recital in December 2022).

And the Chamber Music Society of Sacramento plays at a local church on Saturday night, with a program spotlighting the bassoon, an instrument that looks like a bedpost (and can sound like a foghorn) that only occasionally gets to bask in the spotlight. Les Arts Florissants is a well known ensemble in early-music circles. They were launched in France in 1979 by noted American conductor and harpsichordist William Christie.
