Dr. Dennis Christensen's Rockford abortion clinic on Auburn Street is closing after a court ruled its permit invalid. The clinic will continue serving existing appointments for a few weeks, then refer new patients to Midwest Reproductive Health. Christensen cited the operational "hassle and expense" and the availability of another clinic as reasons for the closure.

Dr. Dennis Christensen plans to close the abortion clinic he opened in January 2023 at 611 Auburn St. after an Illinois appellate court ruled its special use permit to operate was granted in error. Christensen said the clinic will see patients it already has appointments with over the next two or three weeks. New patients are being referred to Rockford's other abortion clinic, Midwest Reproductive Health, 4236 Maray Drive, a full-service women's reproductive health facility.

Rockford made errors in its decision allowing the Rockford Family Planning Center to operate an abortion clinic at 611 Auburn St. under the auspices of a prior special use permit, an appellate court has ruled. Opponents to the abortion clinic — including nearby neighbors who had been said to lack legal standing — challenged a Rockford Zoning Board of Appeals decision that allowed the clinic to operate under a decades old special use permit.

Plans for an emergency operations center are moving forward more than two years after winning a $1 million Congressional grant to build it inside Rockford Fire Department headquarters, 204 S. First St.Rockford's current makeshift center — activated in case of a major natural disaster, severe storm, mass casualty event or major incident — can take 30 minutes to assemble inside a fire department classroom, Rockford Fire Chief Michele Pankow said.
