Citing dramatic increases in cost estimates, Rockford's Finance & Personnel Committee has voted to not bury power lines underground along 11th Street as the road undergoes a $26 million reconstruction. If approved, the cost — which went from $4.5 million to $9.3 million in recent months — would be borne by Rockford residents and businesses, said Ald. Kevin Frost, R-4. "My feelings are pretty strong against it because it is truly a tax on the residents," Frost said.

There were 1,200 more jobs filled in the Rockford region in April than a year earlier and unemployment decreased 1.4 percentage points, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Led by increased jobs in health care, logistics and hospitality, Rockford was among 11 of 12 metropolitan statistical areas in Illinois to see decreases in unemployment in April compared to a year earlier, from 5.6% to 4.2%.

A Wisconsin man was sentenced to 14 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to the sexual assault of a woman in the Patriots Gateway Center parking lot in the 600 block of south Fifth Street. Turhane E. Henderson, 26, of Madison, Wisconsin, was identified as part of a photo lineup by a victim of sexual assault, according to information from the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office.
