Turf plan tightens oversight over executive upkeep

According to the American Society of Golf Course Architects, a typical nine-hole executive layout requires about 40 acres of land. Multiply that by The Villages’ 42 executive courses, and that works out to 1,680 acres, or just shy of 1,273 football fields. That’s a huge heap of grass clippings — and fertilizer and weed killer and whatnot. Just another outsized number when it comes to golf in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.

Though he’s just 9, Blake Godfrey already is something of a Masters golf expert. “I love to watch the Masters,” said Blake, who spends plenty of free time viewing old clips, especially if Scottie Scheffler’s involved. This weekend, he just might punch his own ticket to Augusta National. Blake tees off Sunday in the regional finals of the Drive, Chip & Putt skills competition, taking place at Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia.

Lorin Andersen certainly wasn’t the first Villager to set a goal of teeing it up at every golf hole available in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. But the Village of Citrus Grove golfer wasn’t content to let it settle there. There’s the four putting courses sprinkled around The Villages. And the “challenge” putting hole that’s a bonus finish at Marsh View Pitch & Putt. When Andersen learned of the larger cups at Sarasota executive course, he played a round into those.

Paul Hayes approached the 18th green at Shallow Creek Golf Club on Sunday with a bit of a quizzical look on his face. The Village of Moultrie Creek golfer had seen his approach sail wide left and take a high bounce off the cart path, losing sight of it against the bright sky. Just as he began walking back toward his cart, a voice came from the adjacent 10th tee. “Yellow ball?” a woman called out.

Like snowflakes or fingerprints, no two golf courses ever are exactly the same. That’s part of the game’s charm. Some offer a subtle distinction — trees, water, bunkering — an acquired taste, perhaps, that golfers learn and embrace. Other layouts don’t mind telling you right away. Put the new Shallow Creek Golf Club in the latter category.

In his time overseeing Hacienda Hills Golf Club, Kevin Sackville has become rather adept at keeping things humming from temporary office space. “We’d figure out how to run things, then at some point we’d have to figure out something else,” he recalled wryly. “We were in the Lakes/Oaks (starter) building; we were in the cart barn. Then we’re out of the cart barn and moving on. But we managed to do it all the way around.”At last, Sackville and the Hacienda Hills staff can settle in.
