Lights!!And with Santa’s traditional flip of a candy cane lever, The Villages’ Christmas season officially got underway Saturday evening when the massive tree at Lake Sumter Landing Market Square lit up over festival attendees that surrounded the performance stage. “This is phenomenal,” said Talina Starr, of the Village of Hammock at Fenney, who made her first Tree Lighting Festival a three-generation family outing.

According to the American Society of Golf Course Architects, a typical nine-hole executive layout requires about 40 acres of land. Multiply that by The Villages’ 42 executive courses, and that works out to 1,680 acres, or just shy of 1,273 football fields. That’s a huge heap of grass clippings — and fertilizer and weed killer and whatnot. Just another outsized number when it comes to golf in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.
