Sarosh Rana, MD, has been named the new chair of the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective Aug. 1. Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, announced the appointment Wednesday. Dr. Rana serves as section chief of maternal-fetal medicine at UChicago Medicine and a professor in the OB/GYN department at the University of Chicago.

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will be home to the first of its kind targeted particle therapy treatment in the state. Proton therapy will offer patients new hope, with construction starting the end of this month on a $36 million project at Nebraska Medical Center. Proton therapy provides significant benefits to certain patients. The system focuses an extremely targeted dose of radiation for the treatment of tumors, minimizing damage to surrounding tissues and reducing side effects.

Robert Gallo, MD, director and co-founder of the USF Health Virology Institute, co-founder of the Global Virus Network and a renowned HIV and AIDS researcher, will join other leading researchers when the Society of NeuroImmune Pharmacology holds its annual conference June 8-11. The conference will be hosted by researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Russell McCulloh, MD, UNMC associate vice chancellor for clinical research, has been named the chief medical officer for UNeHealth, the contracting and fiscal arm for industry-funded clinical trials on behalf of UNMC. UNMC Interim Chancellor Dele Davies, MD, announced the appointment. Dr. McCulloh began his new role on March 10. “UNeHealth will benefit from Dr. McCulloh’s research and leadership experience,” Dr. Davies said.

Ryan Lee, MD, has been named the next chair of the UNMC Department of Radiology, effective Aug. 1. Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, made the announcement to UNMC leaders and department faculty and staff earlier this week. “I am thrilled that we have been able to attract an experienced and visionary academic and clinical physician of Dr. Lee’s caliber to lead the department of radiology,” Dr. Britigan said.

In a stirring ceremony in January, United States Air Force Lt. Col. Elizabeth Schnaubelt, MD, medical director of the U.S. Air Force Center for Sustainment of Trauma Readiness Skills (C-STARS) Omaha, based at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, was promoted to the rank of colonel. She was officially promoted by her father, United States Army Col. (ret.) Thomas Rini.

Suzanne Haney, MD, has joined the UNMC College of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs as assistant dean for faculty development, effective March 1. Dr. Haney is a professor in the UNMC Department of Pediatrics and is the Children’s Nebraska division chief of child abuse pediatrics. “Dr. Haney brings a wealth of expertise and skills to the role of assistant dean for faculty development,” said Nada Fadul, MD, associate dean for faculty affairs in the UNMC College of Medicine.
