Block Club Chicago, a nonprofit news organization focused on Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, is looking for a full-time reporter to cover Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Old Town. As a beat reporter for this group of neighborhoods, you’ll be expected to cover everything from local school council meetings and breaking news to restaurant openings and real estate developments. Night meetings are common. This is not a 9–5 job (though it is typically Monday-Friday).

The answer would tell their combined third and fourth grade class how many rooms were vacant in an imaginary hotel. How much is 224 minus 176? The girls quickly realized they had to subtract seven from two in the middle column. How’s that possible if seven is bigger than two?

CHICAGO — Enrollment in Chicago Public Schools is flat for the first time in more than a decade, according to preliminary data obtained by Chalkbeat. New preliminary numbers for this school year show just over 322,500 students are registered at CPS schools. The data represents enrollment as of the end of the day Monday, the 20th day of the school year, when the district traditionally takes its official count.

BEVERLY — Forty seven performers and a 10-piece live orchestra brought the stage at the Baffes Theater at the Beverly Arts Center to brilliant life this summer in a gorgeously designed production of “Hello, Dolly!” It was one of several live theater productions in the past year at the community arts center that seemed to indicate a promising future for the center, 2407 W. 111th St., as a leading theater producer on the South Side.
