Gary and other Lake County residents are being asked to help gauge dangerous pollutants after an initial study found contamination at alarming levels. “By participating, you could learn more about pollution in your home, whether you have been exposed, and how that might affect the health of your family and the community,” said Ellen Wells, director of the occupational and environmental health sciences program at Purdue University and lead researcher of the study.

NorthShore Health Centers opened its first Gary clinic Tuesday, complete with confetti and “Welcome Gary” signs. The new facility at 2200 Grant St. brings family practice, dental, optical, behavioral, and women’s health care under one roof — expanding access in a city served by just one hospital and sparing patients 10- to 15-mile trips for routine checkups. “I’m so excited; our community needs this,” said Gary resident Kiara Summers, a care coordinator in NorthShore’s family practice clinic.

Nestled at an unassuming corner in Gary, sandwiched between construction trucks and railroad tracks, lies a “nonstop gift of nature” near the end of Chase Street: a free water well. For decades, Gary’s artesian well has brought people from near and far to collect from its cool, bubbling spout, rumored to have medicinal properties. The crystal clear water is regularly tested by the Calumet River Basin Authority, and is safe to drink.

This week, I had my last interview of the year, (who liked my Pulitzer story so much they printed it out!) spoke at my first panel, volunteered as a mentor for Black students from my HS, won a raffle at my gma’s church, & successfully introduced my mom to pho. A win is a win 🏆🥳
