According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the rate of child abuse in Kentucky is higher than the national average. In this Project CommUNITY report, the new leader of Family & Children's Place said she is committed to fighting the problem while creating a safer community for everyone. "Kentucky is now in the top five in terms of highest rates of child maltreatment in the country," president and CEO of Family & Children's Place Elea Fox said.

Margaret Dickinson has been feeding the hungry in Old Louisville for more than 60 years through her work with Calvary Episcopal Church's food pantry. "This looks like a whole lot of stuff, but by the time we get to 11:30 there probably won't be anything left," Dickinson said. Dickinson has volunteered with the church and its food pantry since 1964. "I've been around here forever, so, I mean, I know that this is important," she said.

The Louisville nonprofit Hope Scarves is expanding to help kids. The organization is using superhero capes to bring joy to children fighting cancer and their families. "So this is our logo that has been turned into a superhero, and they come in green, blue, purple and pink," said Anna Laura Edwards, executive director of Hope Scarves. They are called Hope Capes. And they are part of a new mission launched by Hope Scarves. "We wanted something to, for children," said Edwards.

A $1.7 million expansion is underway at a Louisville preschool. Carriage House for Children is working to offer more educational services to families in our region. "We're expanding Carriage House by 5,100 square feet," said Lori Wilson, executive director of Carriage House. She said fundraising started in 2022. Miranda Construction broke ground on the project in June 2024 at the preschool's Eastpoint Office Park location.

A new resource for adults with disabilities is now available in west Louisville. "This is our art room where Davina is teaching the guys about parrots, where they come from, what they eat, what's their life expectancy," Jamese Hmaide, Director of Jefferson County Programming for the nonprofit Pillar, said. It's busy inside the craft room of Pillar's newest engagement center. "We always teach them that art is like beauty – it's in the eye of the beholder," Hmaide said.
