    This hymn was composed for Remembrance Sunday and sung for the first time in Coventry Cathedral in England. During his years in ministry, Rev. Kaan helped form the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. His focus was always on inter-church relations, human rights, and peace. Born in Haarlem, his experience as a young teen under Nazi occupation in the Netherlands shaped him deeply.

    In a recently published book on Dutch war monuments (Ruurd Kok, Denken Over Herdenken. Oorlogsmonumenten in Nederland), one chapter is devoted to some monuments that have been erected in the Netherlands not to honour but to mark the death of German soldiers on Dutch soil in the Second World War. Since the 1990s Germans have been known to attend Dutch memorial-day services, especially in the border regions where historical cross-border relationships have pretty much returned to what they were.

It is 1943 in Holland during the height of the Nazi occupation of that country. Everywhere Jews are rounded up for shipping to concentration camps. Able-bodied Dutch men are required to report for labour duty in German war factories or face dire consequences. Jews and young men go “underground” to hide from death or Nazi collaboration.
