This hymn was composed for Remembrance Sunday and sung for the first time in Coventry Cathedral in England. During his years in ministry, Rev. Kaan helped form the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. His focus was always on inter-church relations, human rights, and peace. Born in Haarlem, his experience as a young teen under Nazi occupation in the Netherlands shaped him deeply.

In a recently published book on Dutch war monuments (Ruurd Kok, Denken Over Herdenken. Oorlogsmonumenten in Nederland), one chapter is devoted to some monuments that have been erected in the Netherlands not to honour but to mark the death of German soldiers on Dutch soil in the Second World War. Since the 1990s Germans have been known to attend Dutch memorial-day services, especially in the border regions where historical cross-border relationships have pretty much returned to what they were.

In late February I travelled for work purposes for the first time since the pandemic began three years ago. My travels took me to the Pittsburgh area where I spoke at two Christian institutions of higher education. The first was Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, where a good friend of mine, Bill Witt, teaches. Trinity is an independent Anglican seminary that trains prospective clergy in several jurisdictions, including the largest Anglican provinces in Africa.

There were not many options on Sunday afternoons. We were not allowed to do homework. Even workaholic men like my father were not permitted to labor. There was, however, a lot of visiting. Sometimes an invitation was extended in the church parking lot. Other times my parents proposed a drive after lunch and we wandered roads and highways for an hour or two until one or the other commented, “So-and-so lives near here.” Then we’d stop by to check. Adults drank coffee and kids neon-hued Freshie.

It’s no mean feat, telling the truth about history. History is politicized, covering contested terrain. It’s often told solely by the victors. It’s often grim, and sifting through the bones and ashes isn’t always the happiest endeavor. And it’s often received with a kind of snooty modern superiority. All that said, it’s important to carry on going back to the past, because it’s of utmost importance to know where we come from. The former history major in me takes that as axiomatic, anyway.
