In San Ysidro, a dad told us he was scared. Locals in southeast San Diego said their neighbors wanted independence from either political party. And neighboring Imperial County, a usually reliably blue region, went for Donald Trump. The November election saw voter shifts as fewer residents voted for the Democratic presidential candidate than in the two elections before that. And while now President-elect Trump mostly held his coalition, he saw gains in some communities where Democrats lost ground.

This year, we again saw early on how powerful reporting can be when we focus on providing news not just about, but for communities. Our San Diego Documenters program sent trained citizens to nearly 160 public meetings across the region in 2024, many of them held by lower-level committees that see little attendance — and news coverage — but where major decisions are discussed for the first time.
Coronado will receive $6 million allocation from Port of San Diego’s budget surplus

The Port of San Diego’s budget is in surplus this year, and $6 million of it will be allocated to Coronado projects. Parts of Coronado’s shoreline is managed under trust by the San Diego Unified Port District, which was formed in 1962. At that time, some tidelands and submerged lands were reassigned from their respective cities to the port. By law, the lands must be used for purposes that serve the public good.
Measure E’s failure could lead to budget cuts at San Diego libraries

The city of San Diego’s public libraries may face a 10% budget cut next year after a proposed sales tax increase appears headed for failure. Director Misty Jones said at a recent Board of Library Commissioners meeting that the figure was an early estimate, but that Measure E’s failure would bring “a pretty drastic situation” to the library system’s $77 million budget. As of Monday, the measure was failing by fewer than 5,000 votes, according to unofficial election results.

It may look like a small lake, but Cootes Paradise marsh was once nearly covered from end to end with aquatic vegetation. In the 1930s, plants covered about 85 per cent of the marsh. By 1984, this had declined to 15 per cent and most of the remaining plants were non-native invasives. The vegetation is vital for many fish, birds, small mammals and other animals that are all part of a healthy ecosystem. Restoring Cootes has long been a goal for Royal Botanical Gardens and its partners, and it’s vital.
