As the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers plow ahead with their efforts to reshape immigration, trade and environmental policy, officials in Imperial County have struck a cautious tone. At their regular meeting Tuesday, the five-member county Board of Supervisors met with lobbyists from Paragon Governmental Relations, the firm that pushes the county’s priorities in Washington. They discussed the federal government’s latest moves ahead of the county’s annual upcoming budget talks.

In the last days of his administration, President Joe Biden created a new national monument on the border of Riverside and Imperial County. The Chuckwalla National Monument granted sweeping federal protections to over 600,000 acres of high desert to the east of the Salton Sea. It was a major victory for the six tribes and dozens of environmental justice groups in Southern California who had campaigned for the monument.

The Imperial County Board of Supervisors voted this week to publicly rebuke their chief accountant and top auditor, sending another tremor through the county government. The five-member Board unanimously approved a vote of “no confidence” in county Auditor-Controller Karina Alvarez. County officials accused Alvarez of mismanaging her office, delaying key financial reports and jeopardizing at least one federal grant.
