1 INTRODUCTION Alcohol consumption is a leading cause of death, disease and disability globally [1, 2]. Targeted price-based interventions, for instance, minimum unit pricing (MUP), can reduce alcohol consumption, and as a result alcohol-related morbidity and mortality [3-6]. MUP sets a legal ‘floor price’ below which retailers cannot sell a particular volume of pure alcohol to consumers [3].

1 INTRODUCTION Biodiversity is at risk worldwide due to dramatic rates of environmental change, often as a result of anthropogenic activities (Knapp et al., 2021; Malhi et al., 2020). Rare species are especially susceptible to extinction in the face of such change (Mouillot et al., 2013), and as such, rare species often drive declines in the biodiversity of communities and systems (Dee et al., 2019).

We know from several research studies that lower socioeconomic groups – categorised by having a lower income, no qualifications and living in the most deprived areas – suffer greater rates of alcohol-related hospitalisation and deaths. This is despite the fact that socioeconomically disadvantaged groups drink less alcohol on average than the more advantaged.
