Just over a decade ago, Liliana Karesh was a new immigrant to the U.S.Karesh, along with her mother, father and two older sisters, came to this country from their home in Moscow, hoping for more opportunities and a better quality of life. If you had asked Ovier Montano Gonzalez one year ago if he would be graduating on Friday with his class at Napa's Camille Creek Community School, he would have been highly doubtful. “I thought it was never going to happen,” the Camille Creek senior admitted. Before enrolling at Camille Creek, “I wasn't really the type of person that would make it on time or would just make it to school in general,” said the 18-year-old Montano Gonzalez.

It was Dec. 2, the last day to turn in University of California applications, and Miroslava De Reza-Sifuentes was about to submit hers. A senior at Vintage High School, De Reza-Sifuentes had excellent grades and expected to be accepted at several of those UCs. Her required documents were gathered and her personal essay written. “I worked hard on my UC application,” she recalled. “My application was finished, I was just waiting to turn it in.”The UCs never got the chance.
