Picture this: a dimly lit workout studio, the pounding of sneakers as people furiously push through burpees, all while a coach yells, “Ten more seconds!” as you yearn for that rest period on the other side. Does that give you the vibes of, say, a sweat-drenched Orangetheory class? Or Equinox’s cult-favorite MetCon3 class circa 2012? Or perhaps you’re having flashbacks to the first time you went to your local CrossFit box.

I go for walks all the time—with my dog or pushing my daughter in a stroller. But to be honest, I rarely return thinking, Whew, workout accomplished. I moved and got some steps in, sure, but it often didn’t feel as intense or challenging as my other sweats. Lately, though, I’ve totally rethought that somewhat shortsighted view. Walking has received a major glow-up in recent years, with countless hashtags (#hotgirlhikes, #silentwalks, #12330, and more) taking over social media.

Women's Health may earn commission from the links on this page, but we only feature products we believe in. Why Trust Us? Here's a riddle for you: What's a fun childhood activity that's also a trendy workout and only requires a small portable piece of equipment? You guessed it, a weighted hula hoop is correct. (Trampolines and jump rope are other options, too.) What you used to consider just plain fun is actually a solid workout and well worth your time right now.
