This month, Eos is shining a light on some already bright stars of science. In this year’s career issue, we follow 14 Earth and space scientists through the trials, experiments, and restarts it took to get them where they are today. Cate Larsen is a social media “rock” star, dropping groovy geological knowledge on audiences far and wide. One of the few Black faculty members at her university, Adriana Alves is helping pave the way for others like herself.

Update: The China Earthquake Network Center reported the Uqturpan earthquake was responsible for injuring six people and damaging more than 120 homes. Hundreds of emergency responders have delivered thousands of blankets, bedding supplies, and stoves to the region, where temperatures dipped below zero. No deaths have been reported. A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the Kyrgyzstan-China border just after midnight local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

When I was in high school, I had to take a career test—the kind that predicted what your future profession should be on the basis of your answers to a series of seemingly unrelated questions. My result? A journalist. My teenage self said “nope,” and I walked as far away from journalism as I thought possible. I wanted to be a scientist. Experiments, the great unknown, big discoveries—I loved it all.
