The number of potential consumers in the U.S. is expected to increase by 12 million over the next five years, Nicolas Hieronimus, L'Oréal 's chief executive officer, shared during a recent analyst meeting. So to mine that opportunity, L'Oréal is spending - a lot. Last week, the company unveiled its newest research and innovation center in Clark, N.J., a $160 million, 250,000-square-foot hub that is the company's largest R&D facility outside of its home country, France.

Carol Hamilton, a key architect of the growth of L’Oréal USA, will retire from the company on May 1. During the course of her 40-year career there, Hamilton has played a role in almost every area of the business. She joined the consumer products division as a marketing director for L’Oréal Paris in 1984, becoming U.S. brand president in 2000 and then global brand president of what is now the world’s largest beauty brand.

The weather was cold and dreary, but the mood in Miami for the second iteration of Cosmoprof Miami, held Jan. 21-23, was upbeat. The event attracted about 19,000 attendees from 115 different countries — largely on track with last year — and a slew of new exhibitors. The number of fragrance brands, for example, doubled, while the number of skin care and makeup brands were each up by about 25 percent.
