CHEYENNE – The Laramie girls soccer team nearly scored in the second minute of Wednesday afternoon’s matchup with Cheyenne Central. Sophomore Shaylee Lucero got behind the Indians’ defense and slipped a shot past goalkeeper Elise Newton, who was coming out to challenge. Central’s Kimberly Klaassen was able to hustle back and keep the ball from going into the net. That was a precursor of things to come for the Plainsmen during a 6-1 victory over Central at Riske Field.

CHEYENNE — Wednesday night’s match started inauspiciously for Cheyenne Central, but it ended with a flourish. The Indians surrendered an own goal in the first 20 seconds before scoring three goals in the final 13 minutes of a 4-2 victory over Laramie. “That first goal was really unfortunate, because we broke the cardinal rules of passing the ball back to the keeper,” Central coach Dirk Dijkstal said. “You don’t put it on frame and you don’t just blast it back there, and we did both.

CHEYENNE — Try as he might, Trey Downham couldn’t master the form necessary to run the 110-meter high hurdles. The Cheyenne South senior hoped he could get his trail leg to cooperate and stop looking like he was jumping over each hurdle instead of rhythmically running over them, but it never happened. As a result, Downham focused on the 300 intermediate hurdles, 200-meter dash, high jump and running a leg of the 4x400 relay.

CHEYENNE — It’s rare that an athlete gets the opportunity to play one sport at the college level. Being afforded the chance to play multiple sports is even more rare. The percentage of athletes who get to do those things alongside their best friend is infinitesimal. Yet, that’s exactly what Cheyenne Central seniors Izzy Kelly and Karson Tempel will do.

CHEYENNE — Cheyenne Central spent much the first half of Tuesday night’s matchup with Cheyenne South being stifled and frustrated. The Bison weren’t playing an entirely defensive posture, but were committing extra defenders in the penalty area any time Central got into the attacking third. Central changed course during the second half on its way to a 3-0 win. “We played a little bit slow and a little bit behind and the shots were just railing off the (goalkeeper),” Indians coach Dirk Dijkstal said.
