    The Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Amendment Bill (Bill) had its first reading in Parliament last week, to (at least at this stage) broad cross-party support, and was referred to the Justice Select Committee. This follows the relevant Cabinet Paper released last year, which we discussed at the time. Public submissions on the Bill are now being called, with a closing date of Friday, 28 March 2025.

    Work has continued this week on sprucing up the city beaches ahead of Labour Weekend and there has also been clean-up work in other places, including under city bridges. “Sunny days are here and we’re working hard to clear large woody debris from our beaches and under our bridges,” a council spokeswoman said. “We’ve been tackling camping sites at Turihaua, Pouawa and have been cleaning up the remaining debris on Waikanae and Midway beaches.” “Tolaga Bay Beach north is next in line,” she said.

    The Tairāwhiti iwi contingent arrived at Tūrangawaewae Marae this morning and joined with the rest of te iwi Māori to pay respects to Kīngi Tūheitia. Uri (descendants) of the four Tairāwhiti iwi — Ngāti Porou, Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki — have all travelled overnight to Ngāruawāhia to represent the region at the tangi. They are among the thousands who have been to Tūrangawaewae Marae since Kīngi Tūheitia’s untimely death.

    An eight-mission schedule took the Trust Tairāwhiti Eastland Rescue Helicopter to areas from Hicks Bay to Hawke’s Bay in the seven-day reporting period from Monday, August 26. Carrying out an inter-hospital transfer and responding to four medical events and three trauma injuries made up a programme that started last Monday at 12.15pm when the team transferred a patient in serious condition from Gisborne to Auckland Hospital.
