Thousands without power after hail, wind and rain batter Austin

More than 67,000 Austin Energy customers are without power after high winds and hail swept through the area Wednesday evening. The storm was part of a wider severe thunderstorm watch issued by the National Weather Service that is in effect until 10 p.m. tonight. Officials at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport posted on X that winds from the storm broke doorway glass near Checkpoint one. This is a developing story.

Texas falls 28-14 to Ohio State, capping one of the best seasons in years

The Texas Longhorns came up short again in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, falling to The Ohio State University Buckeyes. The Longhorns had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter before a fumble recovery and touchdown for Ohio State put the game out of reach for good. It's the second straight year the Longhorns qualified for the College Football Playoff and their second consecutive loss in the semifinal round.

The game will be at DKR Texas Memorial stadium at 3 p.m.Texas finished the season ranked 5th, giving them the home-field advantage. A win against Clemson will send the Longhorns to play Arizona State, the Big 12 champion. Making the playoffs marks a successful end to the Longhorns' first regular season in the SEC, although things didn’t end exactly as the team wanted.

The Texas Longhorns football team made a pretty smooth transition to the SEC. They just couldn’t figure out how to beat Georgia. After storming through the regular season, with only a loss to the Bulldogs blemishing their record, they stumbled again in the SEC title game, falling 22-19 to Georgia. The loss knocks UT out of contention for a first round bye in the college football playoffs. But the team is virtually a lock to get a bid when the 12-team field is announced Sunday.

Roy Montelongo’s journey to tejano music legend started in Hays County back in 1938, shortly before his family relocated to Austin. His father, Vicente, was a member of the famed Beto Villa Orquesta as a saxophonist and clarinetist, instruments he would soon take up under his father’s tutelage. Growing up in Austin, Montelongo came up playing music with other legends of the city’s tejano music scene such as Alfonso Ramos and Manuel “Cowboy” Donley.

Jay Herrera didn’t set out to become a rapper. He was just looking to share his poetry on social media when a friend encouraged him to make the transition from the written to the spoken word. Herrera has since released four albums in five years under the name Vintage Jay. A new collaboration with fellow Austinite BLAKCHYL is set for release Sept. 27.
