This is part of our parent company’s Founder’s Day of Caring, an annual volunteer event at all Nexstar stations around the country that recognizes our company’s birthday.

    TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local and state officials are staying tight-lipped after a local teacher is accused of slapping a 9-year-old boy during a recess altercation. The incident occurred March 13 at Tecumseh North Elementary School, located east of Topeka in the Shawnee Heights School District, according to a law enforcement report obtained by 27 News. A district spokeswoman declined to comment, even as a Shawnee County sheriff’s officer reported seeing the slap on surveillance footage.

    TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka Police have released the names of the victim and suspect from a deadly morning shooting outside an Oakland gas station. Police said Caleb Brown, 19, killed Oscar Ramirez, 24. Both men are from Topeka. Police found Ramirez dead outside the Kwik Shop at 746 NE Wabash, west of Billard Airport, around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

    TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Shawnee County judge has appointed a successful criminal defense attorney to help Dana Chandler as she works to appeal her recent murder convictions. Chandler has been in and out of court for more than a decade for killing her ex-husband, Mike Sisco, and his fiancé, Karen Harkness in 2002. The victims were found dead in their bed inside their Topeka home after being shot. Chandler represented herself at trial when she was first convicted in 2012, when she received a life sentence.

    TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas voters will decide whether they want to start electing Supreme Court justices, a move the state’s governor has come out against. The August 2026 vote would change the state’s constitution, which allows the governor to pick replacements for vacant seats on the Kansas Supreme Court from a slate of three nominees recommended by a nominating committee under . If amended, the new law would allow voters to appoint justices.
