Houston’s pre-eminent hip hop duo, Blaze X Black, has never lacked confidence. They know they’re good. They’ve been honored with their own day (August 4) by the City of Houston, are Houston Press Music Awards winners and have hordes of fans following their music, which they’ve been creating for more than a decade. So, it’s not exactly surprising to hear Rick Blaze and Bishop Black singing high praises for their new album, NAHIMSAYIN, which releases to listeners everywhere May 27.

But, what’s to account for those booms? In the case of Ximena Sariñana, it’s the result of heat, pressure and the shifting tectonic plates of her life. The longtime Mexican singer/songwriter and actress is experiencing a creative boom that is best described as volcanic, an eruption of music that is being released as a trio of EPs. She’ll be performing songs from those records and an impressive back catalog when she returns to Houston Friday, May 2 at The Heights Theater.

Since the current wave of ICE raids began, protests against Donald Trump’s hardline immigration stance have risen across the country. Some of those gatherings have been large, like the march which drew an estimated 20,000 people to the heart of Houston earlier this month. That event was sponsored in part by FIEL Houston and the immigrant-led civil rights organization was back at it last night, presenting From Houston With Love, a midweek rally at Guadalupe Plaza Park on Houston’s east end .
