Georgia’s G-Day game has long been a spectacle for Georgia fans to get familiar with the upcoming season’s team. Players like Stetson Bennett, Brock Bowers and even head coach Kirby Smart have used the game as an opportunity for a tune-up before the fall season gets underway. The game’s history, though, goes much further back than some supporters might realize.

18-year-old Hudson Welter, a member of the Three Rivers College Rodeo Team in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, lowered himself onto a writhing bull as the crowd roared, mind racing. Last summer, Welter sustained the worst injury of his career – a shattered shoulder blade, broken collarbone, four cracked ribs and a punctured lung – after being thrown from a bull. Friday night, at the annual Great Southland Stampede Rodeo, was the first time he had competed in bull riding since his accident.

A large cemetery stands in a thickly-wooded area in East Athens, almost invisible to those driving by on Fourth Street. Prominent Black Athenians – such as Morton Theatre founder Monroe Bowers “Pink” Morton and Georgia Legislature member Madison Davis, who were both born into slavery – are buried among approximately 3,500 Black Athenians, including veterans, quilters, school teachers, cooks at the University of Georgia, children and more.

Athens-Clarke County Transit Service will be suspended until Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. due to icy and frozen conditions. Transit was suspended as of 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. ACCGov released a list of specific roadway notices, as well.
