Balanced on a Jeffrey pine branch high above Big Bear Lake, the young eagle stretched took a few careful steps to test her balance, spread her wings and leapt — soaring away from the nest she’s called home since early March. At 10:46 a.m. Monday, June 2, Sunny, one of the two eaglets that have captivated hundreds of thousands of fans across the world in recent months, fledged, leaving her sister, Gizmo, behind, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.

Sunny, one of the two young bald eagles that hatched this spring in a nest overlooking Big Bear Lake, has reached another milestone in preparation for its first flight. Shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, Sunny perched on the “high perch” in the nest — a narrow, Y-shaped branch facing the lake — and as the wind picked up, spread its wings and caught air. Sunny hovered for about 3 seconds before the wind knocked the eaglet back in the nest to join its sibling, Gizmo.
