    PAYNESVILLE, W.Va. (WVVA) - An investigation is under way into the theft of bronze veteran markers that had been placed on graves in a McDowell County family cemetery. Five of these government-issued markers, each 24 inches long and 12 inches wide, had been bolted into place on the graves of veterans who had served in wars. But they are now gone. McDowell County Sheriff James Muncy said the thefts at the Ambrose-Mullens Cemetery in Paynesville over the Memorial Day weekend outraged him.

    PRINCETON, W.Va. (WVVA) -The Mercer County Commission voted to invest thousands of dollars in a renovation project on the Day Report Center building during a commission meeting Wednesday. The commission allocated $100,000 from the $2.5 million Opioid Settlement Fund to start the project. Currently, the building that is located across the street from the new Sheriff’s Department, houses the Day Report Center, WV Drug Testing Laboratories, Adult Drug Court, and the Home Confinement offices.

    PRINCETON, W.Va. (WVVA) - Probable cause was found Tuesday in a child kidnapping and neglect case in Mercer County. Kevin Andrew Cochran, 41, is facing three counts of kidnapping and three counts of gross neglect of a child creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury. Cochran’s wife Ashley Smith, 30, who is facing the same charges, waived the time limit to her preliminary hearing on April 24 in Mercer County Magistrate Court.

    RICHLANDS Va. (WVVA) - In honor of local fallen soldiers and their families the Richlands VFW Post 9640 continued their tradition of remembering them. The VFW held their 4th annual Gold Star Cookout to bring local veterans and Gold Star families together on this day of remembrance to eat, and share stories about their loved ones. Phil Blankenship, Vietnam veteran and member of the VFW clarifies that this day is for the soldiers that died for the country.

    ROCK GAP, Va. (WVVA) - Emergency personnel were present at the scene of a crash that occurred inside the East River Mountain Tunnel this evening,Northbound lanes of I-77 in Virginia were closed as crews worked to clear the tunnel. As of 6:15, a small green car and a gray SUV were seen loaded onto tow trucks right outside the tunnel in West Virginia. Virginia State Police, Bland County Sheriff’s Department, Bland County Rescue Squad, and Virginia Department of Transportation were all on scene.
