    BECKLEY, W.Va . (WVVA) -New lodging is available for travelers who stop in Beckley. The Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott opened there doors last week during a soft open but celebrated their official grand opening Wednesday. It is located off of exit 44 on Interstate 77. The Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony outside for Hotel leadership and community members.

    BLUEFIELD, W.Va . (WVVA) - The Bluefield Fire Department was able to purchase additional safety equipment with the help of a recent grant. The Community Foundation of the Virginias awarded the fire department $7,627. According to Fire Chief Chad Bailey, they were able to purchase new batteries for radios. They also bought safety equipment like traffic cones, power flares, and flashlights to help firefighter divert traffic away from a working scene.

    BLUEFIELD, W.Va . (WVVA) - A Bluefield family foundation donated thousands of dollars to the City of Bluefield to invest in multiple projects. Members of the Paul and Carol Cole Foundation presented a check of a little more than $87,000 to the city during Tuesday’s Board of Directors meeting. The city plans to use this money to purchase kayaks and related equipment for the city’s Parks and Recreation department youth programs.

    BLUEFIELD, W.Va . (WVVA) -Students in Diana Sandifer’s first grade class Bluefield Primary School have made it their mission to read as many books as possible this school year. One student in the class has set the record in Mercer County of the most amount of books read in the school year. Layla Belt’s only struggle on the last day of school was finding a book that she hasn’t read yet. Her teacher says she has read over 900 books.

    MATOAKA, W.Va. (WVVA) - A sit-in protest of a planned demolition in Matoaka resulted in community negotiations following the involvement of a County Commissioner and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. Residents learned that county leaders approved the demolition of a small structure called the ‘Pavilion’ located at the intersection of Bridge Street and Barger Street. According to community members, the structure was used as a meeting place for community events, church services and live concerts.
